Summer 2010

METAL INTERPRETATIONS OF TEXTILE TECHNIQUES

August 2-6, 2010

Colleen Lynch

Crochet, knitting and weaving are traditional Maritime skills. Metal can be purchased in very fine thread-like sizes. Bring the two together and you open up limitless possibilities for creating sculpture, home décor and jewelry. Metal doesn’t act like yarn however so this workshop explores how textile techniques can easily be adapted to metal. Manipulating small diameter wires requires only a few simple hand tools and can be done anywhere. After a brief discussion of metals’ characteristics, we will use various sized wires and needles to knit both flat and in the round. We will also do tubular knitting. Crochet will follow. This technique is amazingly freewheeling; your imagination will soar. We will then explore loom and off-loom weaving and incorporating other materials and found objects. During the last two days students will design and complete two or three small projects with emphasis on finishing techniques. Only basic knitting and crocheting skills are required. No weaving experience is necessary, and no metalworking experience is needed.
