Summer 2011
WOODEN NATIVE FLUTES
July 11-15, 2011
Ned Bear
Participants will make a traditionally-designed, natural, solid wood flute, which utilizes a western musical pentatonic scale. Participants will use two prepared pieces of cedar wood. And learn how to assemble, shape, and apply the appropriate mechanics for assembling a viable playing flute. Once assembled, a natural, non-toxic, oil finish will be applied to bring your flute to a polished lustre. Some basic instruction will enable you to walk away from the workshop with a finished, working-musical instrument... a Traditional Native American Love-Flute.

He also studied at the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College (currently known as “ The First Nations University of Canada”)... in the Indian Art Department program… and then continued his art studies at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax NB. He now holds a Bachelor of Education Degree from University of New Brunswick and has pursued Graduate Studies in ‘Critical Theory’ for another two years at the same facility.
He is a New Brunswick certified teacher, having taught Native Art Classes at the Fredericton High School and then moved as Director of Education for Saint Mary’s First Nation.
He has acted as the Chair, for the development of the New Brunswick Museum ‘Wolastoqiyik’ website project.
He continued his art profession throughout, and has participated in numerous regional, national & international group, and solo art exhibitions, presenting an art that is guided by his deep sense of spiritual values. Bear’s focus is on giving a contemporary interpretation to traditional spiritual beliefs, and expresses this in his hand-sculpted masks, and in figure-forms of marble & limestone. He is also involved in the research and the production of the basic ‘traditional’ Native American flute.
