About the Exhibition
Plein Air Painters of the Bay of Fundy is a group of nearly 30 outdoor landscape painters who either live in or visit seasonally the Bay of Fundy region. Works included in the exhibition are representational landscapes done in oil, pastel, watercolour, acrylic or gouache and have been painted en plein air (on-location) within the last two years. Each artist will also be presenting a single studio piece.
With varying perspectives and techniques, these artists capture the essence of the unique and ever-changing landscapes of the Bay of Fundy. Local viewers will recognise beloved areas and favourite spots and visitors will be exposed to the vibrant beauty and diversity of our local environments.
Distinct from studio painting, plein air painting is an experience that requires the artist to engage with the outside, dynamic conditions within the landscape as they paint in the open air. This includes weather, the passage of time, light, environment changes, and unplanned happenings. They often need to paint quickly and efficiently as the landscape is constantly changing.
These artists come together for outdoor painting excursions every year and the exhibiting artists plan to do a paint-out session in St. Andrews in conjunction with the exhibition. This will be the Plein Air Painters of the Bay of Fundy’s ninth year presenting an annual paint-out and sixth year of exhibiting in a gallery space. Previously, they have exhibited in Saint John, St. Andrews, and Lubec, Maine.
