Colour Narratives – Oil Painting
Instructor: Theresa MacKnight
Saturday, June 6th and Sunday, June 7th
9:30am – 4.30pm
Max students: 10
Materials NOT included (except canvases)
In this intermediate oil painting 2-day workshop, we will examine how painters use colour to create a feeling or “colour story”. Each participant will engage in constructing small arrangements inspired by pre-selected
works. These will become the subject for small oil paintings created from direct observation using a practical working method. We will focus on working with a full chromatic palette, colour mixing strategies, finding and drawing strong shapes, and ways to balance direct observation and the poetry of the painted surface.
Notes:
This is described as an intermediate oil painting workshop however those with some painting experience in painting/drawing with other mediums may find this a good way to explore oil painting. The working method we will be using is not appropriate for acrylic painting.
Canvas surfaces will be provided but participants should bring all other materials.
Sunbury Shores has wooden easels but you are welcome to bring your own portable easel if you prefer.
Course fee: $185
Please bring your own lunch.
MATERIALS LIST
Suggested Oil Colours:
Generally, I use a warm and cool of each primary. Cadmiums can certainly be substituted for alternatives such as Hansa Yellows as well as Naphthol and Quinacridone reds.
- – Titanium White
– Cad. Lemon or other Cool yellow
– Cad. Yellow Medium or other warm yellow
– India Yellow
– Cad. Orange Deep
– Cad. Red Light or Deep
– Alizarin Crimson
– Ultramarine Blue
– Phthalo Green or Phthalo Turquoise
Brushes:
I recommend a small variety of filbert and flat, natural bristle brushes sizes 2, 4 & 6
I find synthetic brushes are useful but only later in the painting process. We will rely heavily on the natural bristle brushes especially for blocking in.
Mediums:
Please bring two small containers of linseed oil (one for cleaning brushes and the other to keep clean as a painting medium).
Solvents:
Solvents are not really necessary but you might want a small closed lid container for Gamsol or other odorless studio-friendly solvent for end of day cleaning. Please no turpentine.
Palette:
Please bring a good-sized palette (wood, glass, plexi, paper palette pad). If you have a Mastersons palette box or other, this would be useful for storing and travelling with paint. If you don’t have any of these Sunbury Shores has some glass available for palettes.
Palette Knife:
Good palette knives are important. Please have one good one you are comfortable with (Liquitex, RGM, Sennelier & Gamblin are all good).
Rags:
Please bring some rags, shop towels and or paper towels.
Self-Portrait Workshop
Work with renowned artist Stephen Hutchings to explore and develop your skills with self-portraits using photographs.
Instructor: Stephen Hutchings
Friday, June 19th, 4pm – 7pm
Saturday/Sunday June 20th/21st, 9:30am – 4:30pm
Max 10 students
Materials included
One of the greatest challenges in drawing is achieving a realistic, life-size self portrait using graphite pencils. In this 2 ½ -day workshop, you will get that opportunity. You will use drawing paper with the features of your own face already lightly indicated on it. This establishes the overall positions of your facial features, thereby ensuring a more realistic result. Using a mirror and a photograph of your face as reference, you will draw your facial features and tones to complete your drawing.
Friday evening your face will be photographed and you will have the opportunity to study and draw details of examples of eyes, mouths and noses from photographs and from your own face using a hand-held mirror. Your photograph will be processed Friday evening so that on Saturday morning you will have a 12” x 18” sheet of drawing paper on which your features will be lightly indicated. Saturday and Sunday will see you finish your self portrait incorporating a full range of tones to achieve a realistic likeness. Throughout the weekend there will be demonstrations of material and technique, as well was numerous one-on-one interactions with the workshop leader.
FAQ’s
- This sounds scary, do I have to stare at my face?
- Self-portraiture feels like a confrontation and can be uncomfortable. This is part of why Stephen has created the course around the photo process. You will mostly be looking at sections of your face and studying them as anatomical facts rather than looking at your appearance as a whole.
- Using your own face also sets you up with the ability to practice drawing with the most available subject you have– yourself! You aren’t just learning how to draw, you are also learning how to look and learning methods for practicing your drawing skills.
- Does it have to be a self portrait or can I draw someone else?
- It has to be a self-portrait using a photo taken by Stephen on Friday, June 19th.
- Do I have to come in to have my photo taken or can I bring my own photo?
- You must come in for Stephen to take the photo. This allows for everyone to start from the same place (same composition, angle, etc…). Stephen is also editing the photos to reduce them to minimal facial structure/features. We will not make exceptions to this process since we can’t guarantee consistency or quality of photos and it will add extra steps and disrupt his system.
- Why does it have to be a self-portrait?
- The photos are reduced to a black and white, faint outline of your facial structure/features. Throughout the course you will use this print out and a mirror to study your own features in order to understand structure instead of working on proportions and placement.

Artistic Growth Studio (formerly Jay Dampf Memorial)
Instructor: Theresa MacKnight
Monday, July 13th – Friday, July 17th
9:30am – 4.30pm
Max students: 10
Materials NOT included
This is a unique workshop for people who wish to develop and grow their skills in painting and/or drawing and wish to work at their own pace or have specific goals or projects they wish to work on.
Developed by the late Jay Dampf, a long-time artist instructor at Sunbury Shores, it’s an opportunity to enjoy dedicated time to work on your own practice while also benefitting from individual attention, guidance and critiquing with Theresa. Students bring their own work (drawing, painting in acrylic and oils, and watercolour), either in progress, or ready to start. At the beginning of the week Theresa will meet with each participant and discuss what they wish to accomplish, then start working toward their goals in a supportive, individualized way. Students may choose to work in the excellent studio space at Sunbury Shores or may even choose to work plein air. Both options will be accommodated.
Theresa MacKnight is a highly accomplished artist and art teacher. She has won numerous awards and been exhibited widely across New Brunswick and elsewhere. Theresa has an extensive knowledge of working in different mediums, and teaches with patience, encouragement, and consideration of individual needs. She has spent many years involved with SSANC as instructor, student, and exhibitor.
