New exhibitions at Sunbury Shores celebrate natural environment in paint and fibre
ST. ANDREWS, NB The ocean shoreline of Fundy, and national parks in Canada and the US are explored by two professional artists in new exhibitions opening at Sunbury Shores on August 18, 2023
New Brunswick artist, Lynn Wigginton’s exhibition, Call of the Running Tide, reflects her increasing focus on what’s before our eyes. Where previously the built environment engaged her, she is still painting what is familiar, but with a lens that is partly documenting what she sees and partly “what I live”. In her current oil paintings, the artist reflects on the environmental changes in the corner of the world where she has lived for many years, such as at Saint John’s Saints Rest Beach and along the Fundy shoreline.
According to Wigginton, “While these paintings highlight the energy and beauty to be found here, they also speak of a fragile and increasingly precarious place.”
A fine arts graduate of Mount Allison University who has worked with well-known Canadian artists such as Lawren B Harris, E.P Pulford, David Silverberg and George Thiessen, Wigginton has maintained a career as a well-respected professional artist for 40 years. Her artwork is in private and public collections, including the NB Art Bank.
American Mary Kircher is a fiber artist and textile designer specializing in hand weaving and custom dye techniques. She graduated from North Carolina State University with a Master’s in Art and Design and has taught workshops and exhibited her art throughout North Carolina, the United States, and internationally.
In line with Mary’s process, “It starts with a walk in the woods, leads to the methodical steps of dye and weave, ultimately resulting in tapestry that brings me back to the place I started”, she has been inspired by wild and untamed places in national parks in Canada and the US. In Woven Translations: Wilderness Connections, on exhibition at Sunbury Shores until September 18, 2023, many of her semi-abstract designs reflect the meditative qualities of the places where she has travelled.
The public is welcome to join the artists for the opening of the two exhibitions, Lynn Wigginton: Call of the Running Tide, and Mary Kircher: Woven Translations: Wilderness Connections, on Friday, August 18 from 5:00-7:00 pm.
In addition, both artists will be speaking about their work, in Walkabouts with the Artist. Join Mary Kircher on Saturday, August 19, at 12:30 pm and join Lynn Wigginton on Tuesday, August 22 at 12:30 pm. Everyone is welcome and Walkabouts with the Artists is free.
