Shadow Ecology pairs Heather McCaig’s sculpted glass and Emily Phillips’ paintings to create a gallery exhibition about environmental conservation in Canada. Shadow Ecology will display the price paid for our human impact when resources are stripped for profit without reflecting on the destruction and related effect of the area that is destroyed.

Heather McCaig’s glass draws attention to the disappearing ecosystems of Canada that are quickly becoming shadows on our landscapes due to human disturbance. Her incredibly detailed native flora and fauna from each region brings the country’s ecosystems together in one room, allowing the viewer to recognize that by losing these crucial ecosystems, we are losing ourselves. Emily Phillips’s art shows the ‘opportunity cost’ and potential loss when a forest is cut for timber. Her work is inspired by forest bathing, instilling in viewers an intimate sensory reaction to the Fundy forest, using art as a proxy within an urban viewing environment. Her work captures and transmits to viewers the many atmospheres of the Fundy highlands.

Heather McCaig:

Heather McCaig is a flameworked glass artist from Ontario, who now lives near Sussex, New Brunswick. Heather is entirely self-taught and at the forefront of flameworked fine
art in Atlantic Canada. Through her work, she hopes to portray the fragility of our natural world and inspire a need for its protection. In 2019 she transitioned from her production glass line to creating one-of-a-kind fine craft. Heather has received a scholarship to the Pittsburgh Glass Center in the United States and support from the New Brunswick Arts Board through their Creation Grant, Career Development Grant Program, and an Arts Infrastructure Grant for New and Emerging Artists. In August of 2021, Heather displayed her gallery series titled Shadows, a statement about Canada’s threatened ecosystems and the climate crisis at AX: The Arts and Culture Centre of Sussex. This exhibition was selected by Canadian Heritage and the Department of Tourism, Heritage, and Culture to represent New Brunswick in a virtual exhibition at the Frankfurt Book Fair in Frankfurt, Germany. Heather’s upcoming solo exhibition Together we Bloom will be on display at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in January 2023. Heather is an active board member and the secretary with the New Brunswick Crafts Council (Craft NB). As well as an exhibitions committee member and board member with AX: The Arts and Culture Centre of Sussex.

Emily Phillips:

Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1990, Emily Phillips is an emerging landscape painter. Soon after moving to New Brunswick in 2010, she developed a strong connection to the landscapes of the Fundy region and has built an artistic practice based on this inspiration. Not only is she inspired aesthetically by the landscapes she paints, but she has also studied them academically; Emily holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies and a M.Sc. in Environmental Science from Mount Allison University. Primarily painting in oils, her training is the result of a decade of self-directed exploration, lessons with Maryland plein air painter Judith Fulmer, and elective and extracurricular art courses taken throughout her education.

. . . . . . . . .

The Arts and Culture Centre of Sussex.

Emily Phillips:
