New Brunswick Artist, Melissa Kennedy, is Artist in Residence at Sunbury Shores Arts & Nature Centre, in St Andrews from January 7 – January 21, 2024. With her studio set up in the front window of Sunbury Shores at 139 Water Street, the artist’s explorations in creating and using handmade materials, including original inks and handmade papers, will be visible to all passersby. A public Open Studio visit with the artist takes place Saturday, January 20 from 10:00 am – noon. The 2024 Artist in Residency program is supported through the generosity of the Beaverbrook Canadian Foundation. A second residency at Sunbury Shores funded by the BCF will take place in April. Melissa has an Honours Diploma in Fashion Design from NBCCD, and a Bachelor of Applied Arts from UNB as well as extensive experience working in other media, including photography, drawing, and sculpture. She has participated in several exhibitions and residencies and has received grants from the Canada Council, ArtsNB, and other funding bodies. She has taught at the Saint John Art Centre and the Florence Academy of Art in Italy. Introduction to Haiku Workshop, Sunday June 30, 1:30 - 3:30 pm Angela Leuck, President of Haiku Canada and Carole Martignacco, of Fundy Bay Writers will co-present how to write Haiku, three-line Japanese-inspired nature poetry. The workshop features Angela's book " Porch to Porch", with copies available for sale. Suggested workshop donation for Haiku Canada: $10
Dawson Hatt, a recent graduate of UNB's Media Arts program, is presenting free one-hour session of tips about hands-on film/video making, including camera settings, lighting, transferring files to computer, and video editing. Dawson is working at Sunbury Shores on behalf of the Cultural Human Resources Council - Student Workplace Program. A resident of Black's Harbour, Dawson has won numerous scholarships and prizes and participated in the Silverwave Film Festival. A major event of the 60th anniversary is a public illustrated talk ‘Dear Dorothy: Photographer, Philanthropist, Collector and Sunbury Shores Founder’ on Thursday, September 5, at 4:00 pm at the Huntsman Marine Dunn Theatre in the Fundy Discovery Aquarium Ann Thomas, retired Senior Curator of Photographs, and Interim Chief Curator for the National Gallery of Canada will present her research on Dorothy Meigs Eidlitz, the brainchild behind Sunbury Shores. Eidlitz’s extraordinary life as a feminist, activist for people with mental health challenges, international traveller, photographer, art collector, philanthropist and summer resident in St Andrews will be presented in the public talk.
