Journaling with Mary Kircher

Sunbury Shores 139 Water Street, St Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada

Journaling can take many forms: sketchbook, diary, tapestry diary, and collage as you capture memories and develop ideas. Fibre artist Mary Kircher will teach how to make a unique accordion-style journal as versatile as your imagination. Mary will share her techniques for creating journals, incorporating collage, tapestry, stitching, and writing, resulting in creative displays for fibre artists, book lovers, creators, and makers. Participants are asked to bring found objects that are relatively flat including fabric, feathers, stones, paper ephemera, etc. Mary specializes in hand weaving and custom dye techniques. With a Master’s in Art and Design from North Carolina State University, Mary has taught many workshops and exhibited her work both regionally and internationally, including at Sunbury Shores in August 2023. Mary’s work is in numerous private and public collections. 60th Anniversary Celebration

Fundy Discovery Aquarium 1 Lower Campus Rd, Saint Andrews, NB

Save the date: Thursday July 25, when we will be celebrating 60 years of providing a centre for creativity across our communities. This event will be hosted by the Huntsman Marine Science Centre at their fabulous Fundy Discovery Aquarium. The event is sponsored by the St Andrews Brewing Company, with more sponsorship information to follow. Music will be by the ever-popular singer-songwriter Cathy Hutch Trio. The Event theme is "The Sixties" which we hope will trigger some fun, imaginative, outfits. There will be prizes (as if anyone we know needs an incentive to dress up...)!

Painting with Maggie Rose

This five-day intensive workshop is for artists with some painting experience, although all levels will be accommodated and will benefit. Throughout the course, a wide variety of painting techniques and approaches will be explored. Maggie will demonstrate various ways to “build” your paintings so that the results are complex and reflect and enhance the intent of your narratives. Artists will be encouraged to step out of their comfort zone and to take their work to places of new discovery and levels of excellence. There will be an emphasis on understanding the underlying abstraction of all sound work. Subject matter is up to individual artists and working from life and/or photographs are equally encouraged. Participants are asked to arrive with a variety of possible ideas to explore. Maggie will provide prompts and suggestions for anyone interested in a more exercise-based approach. Participants will have the option to develop one piece or several pieces throughout the week. Thaddeus Holownia: of a feather In memory of his late partner, Gay Hansen, well-known and highly respected photographer Thaddeus Holownia has created a body of work celebrating beauty in the natural world through bird plumage. Gay’s long professional career in the Biology Department at Mount Allison University included amassing a collection of study skins, mounted birds, nests and eggs that reflect her love of ornithology. From this collection, Holownia has put together a photographic print tribute. After a long and distinguished career as Professor and Department Head at Mount A, Holownia is continuing his work as an artist. He has participated in many solo and group exhibitions in Canada and internationally and he has received many grants and awards. His work has been part of numerous collaborations, bookwork and portfolios and is in many public and private collections.   Brigitte Clavette: Vessel forms and other Curiosities A personal selection of sterling silver, bronze and copper objects created by acclaimed artist Brigitte Clavette during the past 44 years, and part of her private collection. Dear Dorothy: an illustrated talk by Ann Thomas

A major event of the 60th anniversary is a public illustrated talk ‘Dear Dorothy: Photographer, Philanthropist, Collector and Sunbury Shores Founder’ on Thursday, September 5, at 4:00 pm at the Huntsman Marine Dunn Theatre in the Fundy Discovery Aquarium Ann Thomas, retired Senior Curator of Photographs, and Interim Chief Curator for the National Gallery of Canada will present her research on Dorothy Meigs Eidlitz, the brainchild behind Sunbury Shores. Eidlitz’s extraordinary life as a feminist, activist for people with mental health challenges, international traveller, photographer, art collector, philanthropist and summer resident in St Andrews will be presented in the public talk.

Information provided is used: to ensure our membership database is current and accurate; to process payments for programs, sales, donations and venue/facility rentals; membership renewals; to respond to information requests; and communicate future events, and promotions.

Payment information is not stored unless member account is specifically set up to have auto-recurring payments for annual membership renewal. Members are able, by request, to change this on their account at any time from auto-recurring to manual/one-time payment and vice versa.

Who has access to my personal information?
Personal information gathered by SSANC is kept in confidence. SSANC employees and directors and affiliates are authorized to access such personal information based only on their need to deal with the information for the reason(s) for which it was obtained.
